Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Brandeis

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. (March 8, 2020) – The Western New England University baseball team split their doubleheader with Brandeis in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. The Judges had a 13-1 victory in game one and the Golden Bears had a 4-0 win in game two

Top Performers
Freshman Drew Michaud (Madison, Conn.), junior Mike Khoury (East Bridgewater, Mass.), junior Isaac Fossas (Dudley, Mass.), and junior Luke Hall (Georgetown, Mass.) each hit a home run for the Judges. Senior Greg Tobin (Medway, Mass.) went the distance, allowing four hits and one run while throwing 13 strikeouts.

Freshman Vincent Caccavale (East Hartford, Conn.) had one run batted in for the Golden Bears, while freshman EJ Dudley (Meriden, Conn.) scored one run.

Game Review
The Golden Bears struck first, scoring in the top of the first inning. Caccavale hit a sacrifice fly out to right field that allowed Dudley to tag up and score. The Judges tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when junior Tommy Sand (South Windsor, Conn.) hit a one run single.

After taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, Brandeis further extended their lead by scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. There were four home runs in the inning by the Judges, including a grand slam from Michaud.

Top Performers

Junior Joe Webber (Marshfield, Mass.) hit two solo home runs for the Golden Bears, while sophomore Ben Harrison (Newtown, Mass.) hit a two-run home run. The pitching staff of senior Matt Vigliotti (Verplanck, N.Y.), senior Jeff Zebrowski (South Hadley, Mass.), and senior Conor Scully (Auburn, Mass.) combined for four strikeouts and only three hits allowed.

Game Review
The Golden Bears had a strong start to game two. After senior Zac Nussbaum (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled with two outs in the top of the first inning, Harrison stepped up and hit a two-run home run. In the next at-bat, Webber homered to center field to give Western New England a 3-0 lead.

It was scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, when Webber hit his second home run of the game, hitting this one to right field.

Western New England (3-4) will travel to South Carolina and face Cortland on Saturday evening. Brandeis (6-4) will play at Salem State on Wednesday afternoon.
