Golden Bears Still Ranked No. 1 in New England Following Bye Week

Western New England (5-0) will host MIT (1-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 10, 2016) – For the third consecutive week, the Western New England University football team has been voted No. 1 in the Grinold Chapter New England Division III Football Weekly Rankings.

Western New England (5-0, 2-0 NEFC), which had a bye this week, returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a New England Football Conference contest against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1-4, 1-1 NEFC) at Golden Bear Stadium.

Western New England received 11 of the 12 first place votes, topping the weekly poll with 119 points. NEFC rival Salve Regina (4-0, 2-0 NEFC) earned the final first place vote and finished second with 105 points. The Golden Bears and Seahawks will meet on Saturday, November 5 in Middletown, R.I. Rounding out the top-five in the poll were NESCAC unbeatens Trinity, Middlebury and Tufts.

The New England Division III Football Poll is presented by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation, which also serves as the title sponsor of the weekly Gold Helmet Awards presented by the New England Football Writers Association throughout the season. 

A 12-member panel representing all four New England Division III playing conferences will serve as voters in this year's poll, and rankings will be released each Monday afternoon through November 14th.  Members of this year's voting panel are E.J. Mills (Amherst), JB Wells (Bowdoin), Jay Civetti (Tufts), Tom Kelley (Framingham State), Paul Castonia (Plymouth State), Pat Haverty (Fitchburg State), Skip Bandini (Curry), Chad Martinovich (MIT), Kevin Gilmartin (Salve Regina), Gabby Price (Husson), Tony Volpone (Castleton) and Mike Landers (Mount Ida).
