Roger Williams Surges Past Western New England in Second Half, 15-4

Canning adds to team-leading total with three goals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 19, 2017) – The Roger Williams University women's lacrosse team scored 13 unanswered goals in the second half on its way to a 15-4 victory over Western New England University on Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Golden Bear Stadium.

Top Performers
• Junior Rachel Canning (Lincoln Park, N.J.) led the Western New England offense with three goals, while classmate Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) found the back of the net once and senior defender Alexa Kimker (Waltham, Mass.) recovered a team-high five ground balls.

• Junior Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn.) fueled Roger Williams' second half surge, tallying eight of her nine points over the final 30 minutes of action. Hogan finished with five goals and four assists.
• Sophomore Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) also scored five goals to go with four ground balls and two draw controls, while senior McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y.) recorded three goals, three ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
• Senior goalie Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) stopped 14 of the 18 shots that she faced.

Game Review
• Stoeppel opened the scoring for the Hawks at the 26:27 mark of the first half, before making it 2-0 just over four minutes later.
• Western New England evened the score with consecutive unassisted goals by Canning at 20:09 and 17:31, respectively, before taking the lead with 8:51 remaining in the half when Winer scored on a feed from Kimker. The Golden Bears held a 4-2 advantage at the break as Canning completed her hat trick on a free position shot with 5:01 on the clock.
• Hogan brought the visitors back to within a goal (4-3) 45 seconds into the second half, but Western New England maintained its slim lead until Stoeppel equalized for the Hawks at the 22:46 mark.
• Everding netted the go-ahead goal 1:16 later, and Roger Williams continued to pull away after that point. The Hawks stretched their lead to six (10-4) on Everding's third goal of the half with 13:41 remaining, before going on to win by 11.

Notes
• Western New England led Roger Williams in shots (18-13), draw controls (5-2) and ground balls (12-9) during the first half of play. The Hawks held advantages in all three categories over the final 30 minutes.
• Canning's hat trick gives her a team-leading 44 goals this season.
• Junior goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with 13 saves, ten of which came in the first half.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, as Western New England (5-10, 2-4 CCC) travels to Boston to take on Wentworth and Roger Williams (10-3, 5-1 CCC) heads to Biddeford, Maine to face the University of New England.
