Canning named to 1st team, McFadden and Norden land on 2nd and 3rd team, respectively

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 28, 2017) – Three members of the Western New England University women's lacrosse team were recognized when the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) announced its award winners and All-CCC teams on Friday afternoon.

Junior attack Rachel Canning (Lincoln Park, N.J.) was named to the All-CCC first team, while junior goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) earned second team honors and graduate midfielder Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) landed on the third team.

Canning led the Western New England offense with a breakout campaign this spring, as she recorded a CCC-leading 55 goals (T-32nd in NCAA DIII) while dishing out 13 assists for a total of 68 points (3rd in CCC). The Lincoln Park, N.J. native, who averaged 3.23 goals per game, scored in each of Western New England's 17 contests this season. She posted 14 multi-goal efforts, with her season-high of six coming on Tuesday in the Golden Bears' 9-8 loss to Salve Regina. Canning put 104 of her 126 shots on target (82.5%) while also recording 19 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers and five draw controls.

McFadden, an All-CCC second team honoree as a sophomore in 2016, repeated on the second team this season following another strong campaign in the cage. McFadden led the CCC with 168 saves (T-7th in NCAA DIII) and ranked second in save percentage (49.9%) while posting a 12.09 goals against average, good for fifth in the conference. The West Islip, N.Y. native recorded 10+ saves in 11 of the 16 games that she appeared in this season, with her season-high of 19 coming in Western New England's 11-7 victory over Curry on April 5.

Rounding out Western New England's three All-CCC honorees is Norden, who earns All-Conference accolades for the second consecutive season after garnering first team accolades last spring. Norden did a little bit of everything in her final season with the program, as she led the Golden Bears in ground balls (58), draw controls (35) and caused turnovers (35) while also ranking fourth in goals (15) and fifth in points (21). The Belchertown, Mass. native started all 17 games during the regular season and served as a team captain for the Golden Bears.

Western New England (6-11, 3-5 CCC), which earned the No. 6 seed in the CCC Tournament, will be on the road Saturday at 3 p.m. at third-seeded University of New England for a first round matchup.
