Second Half Effort Lifts UNE Past Western New England, 13-6, in CCC Tournament

Nor'easters outscore Golden Bears 6-1 over final 30 minutes of action

BIDDEFORD, Maine. (April 29, 2017) – The sixth-seeded Western New England University women's lacrosse team was outscored 6-1 during the second half of a 13-6 loss to third-seeded University of New England on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at UNE's Big Blue Turf.

Top Performers
• All-CCC first team selection Rachel Canning (Lincoln Park, N.J.), the conference's leading scorer during the regular season, paced the Golden Bears with three goals on seven shots.
• Sophomore Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) also recorded multiple points with two goals and one assist, while classmate Rebecca Allen (Franklin, Mass.) finished with a team-high six ground balls.

• Sophomore Nichole Carvalho (South Kingstown, R.I.) fueled the UNE offense with three goals and three assists, while senior Brooke Kelleher (Exeter, N.H.) tallied two goals and two assists.
• Sophomore Korinne Bohunsky (Eliot, Maine) secured a game-high seven draw controls, and junior Jolena Lampron (Lyman, Maine) led all players with seven ground balls.

Game Review
• Canning got the Golden Bears on the board 1:21 into the contest with a free position goal, before making it 2-0 less than two minutes later.
• Carvalho cut UNE's deficit in half at the 24:50 mark, but the Nor'easters still trailed 3-1 after Breen found the back of the net on a feed from freshman Madison Barron (Lebanon, Pa.) 33 seconds later.
• UNE answered with a 3-0 run to claim its first lead (4-3) with 17:51 left in the first half.
• Canning completed her hat trick with 11:14 on the clock, but the Nor'easters closed out the half with a 3-1 run to open up a 7-5 lead at the break.
• The home team's momentum carried into the second half, as Carvalho made it a three-goal game (8-5) on a free position shot at the 28:39 mark.
• The Nor'easters took control from there, as the defense clamped down while the UNE offense, with the help of goals from Lampron, Kelleher and Bohunsky, put the game out of reach.
• Freshman Ariella Ruggiero (Valhalla, N.Y.) scored Western New England's lone goal of the second half with 1:44 remaining in regulation, while Lampron capped the scoring for the Nor'easters in the final minute.

Notes
• With her hat trick today, Canning finished her junior campaign with 58 goals.
• Western New England junior goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) registered 14 saves on 27 shots, while UNE sophomore Maritza Nary (Dover, N.H.) made seven stops on 13 attempts.
• UNE outshot Western New England 37-18, but the Golden Bears held a 34-29 advantage in ground balls.
