11 Wrestlers Placed On All-NEWA Academic Team

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 11, 2022) – The New England Wrestling Association announced today the list of 2021-2022 Conference Season Academic Awards, finding 11 members of the Western New England men's wrestling team collect accolades, while two earned NWCA Scholar All-American status. 

Earning major academic awards for the Golden Bears were Nick Arborio and Darby McLaughlin. Both earned NWCA Scholar-All Americans. Both Arborio and McLaughlin were placed on the NEWA All-Academic Team, as well. Arborio went 37-5 on the season, earning All-American status during his senior campaign with the Golden Bears. Arborio competed in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, finishing in 7th place. McLaughlin completed the 2021-2022 season with a 28-8 record on the mat, finishing second in wins on the team. The sophomore won 13 matches via pinfall, a team high, while picking up nine major decision wins, also a team best. Both Arborio and McLaughlin are two-time NWCA DIII Scholar All-Americans. Arborio and McLaughlin are Western New England Wrestling's 52nd and 53rd scholar all American award dating back to the 1982-1983 season. Arborio and McLaughlin are the 16th Scholar All Americans in last 6 seasons of the wrestling program.

On the NEWA All-Academic team was Liam Mooney, who was unable to compete this season for Western New England, though earned a spot on the all-academic team. WNE also saw Colsten Volpe earn honors. Volpe competed in ten matches for the Golden Bears this season, picking up his first career collegiate victory at the Ithaca Invitational to start the season. Charles Maloy, who won 18 of his 29 matches this season, Corey Cope, who picked up 14 wins on the season, and Colby Reilly, who took victory in 16 matches for the Golden Bears this season on the mat, all came away with academic honors. Samuel Dow (five wins), Nick Faraci (first collegiate win), Aidan DeLuca (three wins in five matches), and senior Mitchell Pardi (two victories) saw their names on the All NEWA Academic Team.
