Western New England Clinches Berth in CCC Tournament with 2-2 Draw at Salve Regina

Dixon, Emmert score for Golden Bears

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 23, 2016) – The Western New England University women's soccer team secured a spot in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament with a 2-2 draw at Salve Regina University this afternoon at Reynolds Field.  

Top Performers
• Senior forward Samantha Emmert (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Danielle Dixon (Plainville, Conn.) both scored for the Golden Bears, while senior forward Brooke Labrie (Granby, Mass.) accounted for three of Western New England's seven shots on goal.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) made eight saves, her second highest total this season. Five of her eight stops came in the second half.

• Freshmen Ella Rath (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Kayla McLaughlin (East Hampton, Conn.) each netted goals for the Seahawks, with both tallies serving as equalizers. Rath's three shots on goal led Salve Regina.

Match Review
• Senior defender Katelyn Cummings (Feeding Hills, Mass.) set up Dixon for the game's opening goal at the 26:16 mark, but the Seahawks levelled the score just 33 seconds later on Rath's fifth of the season.
• Emmert restored Western New England's lead just 3:41 into the second half, but again Salve Regina quickly equalized with McLaughlin beating Veilleux in the 51st minute.
• Veilleux came up with several key stops late in regulation, including a save on a header by junior Taylor Meyers (Washington Township, N.J.) with 19 seconds on the clock.
• The teams combined for just two shots on goal during the two ten-minute overtime sessions before settling for a draw.

Notes
• The evenly matched contest saw Salve Regina hold a 17-16 edge in shots, while both teams took four corner kicks.
• Dixon and Emmert are tied for the team lead with four goals each this season. Dixon's nine points also rank first on the team.
• Western New England is 0-1-3 in four overtime games this fall.
