Golden Bears Battle to 1-1 Draw with Westfield State

Senior Samantha Emmert scores her third goal of the season for Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 12, 2016) – The Western New England University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Westfield State University this afternoon in non-conference action at Suprenant Field.

Top Performers
• Senior forward Samantha Emmert (Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored Western New England's lone goal of the contest in the 11th minute.
 

• Freshman midfielder Bella Eduardo (Springfield, Mass.) equalized for Gordon on a free kick in the 71st minute.

Match Review
• Western New England got on the board just over ten minutes into the match, when junior midfielder Christina Delude (Belchertown, Mass.) put a shot on goal from the top of the penalty area. Westfield State junior goalkeeper Leah Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.) was there to make the save, but the ball popped out of her hands and Emmert headed it into the back of the net.
• Westfield State nearly pulled even at the 16:20 mark, as senior forward Kate Matroni (Hampden, Mass.) had a solid look at the goal, but she sent her shot wide.
• Western New England maintained its 1-0 lead deep into the second half, before the Owls finally broke through with 19:08 remaining in regulation. Following a Golden Bear foul just outside the penalty area, Eduardo buried a free kick past Western New England sophomore Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) to even the score.
• The Golden Bears had several scoring chances during the two ten-minute overtime sessions, outshooting the Owls by a 7-1 margin, but they were unable to secure a game-winner. Freshman Amanda Gagnon (Newington, Conn.) put a shot on goal in the closing seconds, but Owls' sophomore Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass.) made a save at the near post to preserve the tie.

• Western New England outshot Westfield State 14-10 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
• Veilleux finished with four saves for the Golden Bears.
• Emmert's goal places her in a five-way tie for the team lead with three goals.

Western New England (5-8-2, 2-3 CCC) will be back at Suprenant Field on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. for its senior day contest against Endicott, while Westfield State (6-5-1, 3-1 MASCAC) returns home to host Worcester State on Saturday at noon.
