@WNEVolleyball Falls at Western Connecticut State in Tough Sweep, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16

DANBURY, Conn.--Western Connecticut State University outhit visiting Western New England University .243 to .158 to take a 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 non-conference women's volleyball match at Feldman Arena on Thursday evening. The Colonials won their season opener while the Golden Bears fall to 1-1 after playing their second road match in three days.

Senior Olivia Lathrop (.238) had eight kills for Western New England, followed by senior Kelsey Armstrong and sophomore Alona Kornberg with seven apiece, and sophomore Carly Skibinski contributed six. Junior Jessica Sincero led the Golden Bears with 21 assists, while classmate Jenna Leuck had 14 digs and 11 assists.

Karissa Smith paced West Conn with a double-double of 13 kills (.200) and 12 digs. Also contributing to the WCSU hitting attack were sophomore Cheyenne Orsi with eight kills and sophomore Brittany Steele who had seven kills. Junior Danielle Kaminsky had a match-high 39 assists, while senior Cady Cordes had 19 digs on the defensive end.

West Conn pulled out to an early 9-4 lead in the first set, but WNE fought back to narrow the margin to one point, 14-13. West Conn then went on a three-point run for a 17-13 lead, but WNE trimmed the advantage to a single point again, 18-17. The Colonials used another three-point run to take a 21-17 lead, and closed it out by five points after hitting .344 in the frame (Western New England: .172).

In the second set, the score remained tight early before West Conn moved out to a slight lead, 13-9.  Western New England didn't allow the Colonials to build any momentum however, and evened the score at 17-all. A brief run by WCSU made the score 20-17, but after a Kornberg kill, WNE closed to within 22-21. West Conn never allowed the visitors to even the score and held on for a two-point win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was dominated by West Conn. After moving out to an early 6-1 lead, the Colonials pulled away even further and led 18-6. Western New England managed to trim the lead to seven points, but WCSU kept its focus and closed out the match with a 25-16 victory in set three.

Western New England was uncharacteristically shut out in its serve-receive game, registering no service aces while committing six reception errors.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. Western New England hosts Smith College (11 a.m.) and Norwich (3 p.m.) in its Alumni Healthful Living Center home debut. The Colonials travel to compete in a pair of matches at Springfield College with Bridgewater State at 12:30 p.m., followed by a match against the host Pride at 2:30 p.m.
