Undefeated Amherst Lord Jeffs Hold Off Pesky Golden Bears Volleyball in Four Sets

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Amherst College used a strong start to pin a 25-7, 22-25, 25-13, 25-15 loss on host Western New England University in non-conference women's volleyball play on Wednesday evening at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house. The Lord Jeffs up their season's record to 5-0 while the Golden Bears drop back-to-back matches for the first time and fall to 4-3.

Sophomore Carly Skibinski led Western New England with eight kills (.227), followed by six each from senior co-captains Kelsey Armstrong, Olivia Lathrop.

Amherst outhit WNE .191 to .006 and was led offensively by Nicole Gould and Marialexa Natsis with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Nicole Carter added 34 assists.

The Lord Jeffs bolted out to a 25-7 first-set lead after hitting .346 without commiting an error in 26 total attempts. Western New England was held to a minus-.235 attack clip.

But Western New England regrouped in the second stanza to win by three points and level the match at 1-all. Trailing 4-0, WNE reeled off four points on the strength of three errors by Amherst. For the rest of the way, the neither team led by more than three points before another Lord Jeffs' attack error put the Golden Bears in front for good at 18-17. Leading 23-22, WNE closed out the set with an Armstrong kill and AC attack error.

Amherst, however, outhit WNE by over 200 points in the last two sets to take the match. The Lord Jeffs opened the third with leads of 7-0 and 11-2 to never look back, and began the fourth up 4-1.

Western New England ventures out on the road for its next three matches before returning home to the AHLC on Saturday, Sep. 26, against Commonwealth Coast Conference foe University of New England. The Golden Bears' CCC home opener has a 1 p.m. first-serve.
