@WNEVolleyball Sees Split at Clark University Tri-Match in Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass.--The Western New England University women's volleyball team saw its record move to 5-4 on the season after earning a split at the Clark University tri-match on Saturday at Kneller Gymnasium, rallying to edge Coast Guard 8-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-20, 15-7 before suffering a 25-18, 25-9, 25-10 setback at the hands of the host and regionally-ranked Cougars (10-0).

Match 2: Western New England 3, Coast Guard 2 (8-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-20, 15-7)
Western New England's senior co-captain Kelsey Armstrong led all players with 12 kills in the battle of the Bears as they topped Coast Guard in a five-set thriller.

Michelle Hernandez totaled a team-high 20 assists and 10 digs for Coast Guard, while Ashley Dumont and Madison Scott each had eight kills for CGA.

WNE's service game was excellent all afternoon as it racked up 14 in the win over Coast Guard, including seven from junior setter Jenna Leuck. Along with her service aces, Leuck added 14 assists and 15 digs--the latter tying a season high.

The Golden Bears tied the match at 1-set apiece after hitting .423 and taking the second stanza by 11 points.

After Coast Guard went up 2-1, WNE knotted things up again in the fourth before holding the Bears to minus-.263 hitting in the fifth and completing the comeback.

Sophomores Alona Kornberg and Carly Skibinski contributed 10 kills apiece for the Golden Bears.
 
Match 3: Clark University 3, Western New England 0 (25-18, 25-9, 25-10)
The Cougars made quick work of the Golden Bears, including hitting .500 in the second set as they controlled the match from start to finish.
 
Marina Ramos led the way with 13 kills and Ana Mercado chipped in with nine of her own. Shannon Glass-Smythe had six kills, while Courtney Pharr posted five kills and four service aces.
 
Mia Cattaneo picked up nine digs and both Rachel Webb and Rayme Quiban added seven each.

For WNE, senior co-captain Olivia Lathrop hit .429 on seven kills in 14 attack attempts and added a match-best five blocks.

The Golden Bears hit just .014 as a team while Clark posted a .303 attack percentage.

Western New England opens the Commonwealth Coast Conference circuit on Thursday (7 p.m.) at Salve Regina in Newport, R.I.
