Volleyball Opens MIT Quad Tournament with 3-0 Setback to SUNY New Paltz

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (October 16, 2015) - The Western New England University volleyball team opened its three-match trip at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Quad Tournament with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-17) setback to SUNY New Paltz this evening in non-conference action at MIT's Rockwell Cage.

Senior outside hitter Kelsey Armstrong (Groton, Conn.) led the Golden Bear offense, hitting .263 with a team-high eight kills, while junior setter Jessica Sincero (Verplanck, N.Y.) dished out 16 assists and added eight digs on the defensive end.

Senior middle hitter Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) chipped in with five kills, and junior setter Jenna Leuck (Dumont, N.J.) matched Sincero's eight-dig effort for Western New England.

Junior Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y.) helped the Hawks improve to 10-1 in their last 11 matches, hitting .333 with eight kills and eight digs. Classmate Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y.) finished with match-highs in kills (nine) and assists (23), respectively. New Paltz was aided by 13 service aces in the three-set contest.

The Hawks jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the opening set, before a 6-0 run allowed Western New England to claim a three-point advantage. The Golden Bears would lead by as many as four (18-14) in the back-and-forth frame, but New Paltz mounted a late charge, regaining a one-point edge (20-19) on a Western New England attack error and eventually claiming a two-point victory.

After falling behind 2-0 with a 25-17 defeat in the second set and dropping the first five points of the third set, the Golden Bears fought all the way back to take an 11-10 lead on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Alona Kornberg (Fair Lawn, N.J.). New Paltz answered with a 3-0 run, however, and didn't trail again on its way to another 25-17 win.

Western New England (8-8, 2-2 CCC) will look to bounce back tomorrow with two more matches at the MIT Tournament. The Golden Bears are scheduled to take on host and No. 23 nationally ranked MIT, which is riding a 16-match winning streak, at 10:30 a.m. before capping their trip in Cambridge against St. Lawrence University at 1 p.m.
