Volleyball Records Second Straight Sweep with 3-0 Victory over Colby-Sawyer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 28, 2015) - Senior Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) and sophomore Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.) recorded ten kills each as the Western New England University volleyball team posted its second consecutive sweep with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 26-24) victory over Colby-Sawyer College this evening in non-conference action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Lathrop turned in a dominant offensive effort, hitting .667 without a single error in 15 attempts. The senior also contributed defensively with two block assists and two digs as Western New England snapped Colby-Sawyer's five-match winning streak. Junior setter Jessica Sincero (Verplanck, N.Y.) finished with 19 assists and six digs, while senior outside hitter Kelsey Armstrong (Groton, Conn.) added six kills.

Sophomore Alona Kornberg (Fair Lawn, N.J.) recorded a match-high four service aces, her most since totaling five in a 3-0 setback at Emerson College on September 12th.

Junior Gabrielle Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) turned in a double-double effort for Colby-Sawyer, putting down ten kills to go with 11 digs, one block and one assist. Sophomore Lexi Strong (Somersworth, N.H.) matched Rodriguez with 11 digs, while senior Kelsey McCulley (Southampton, N.Y.) compiled six kills, four digs and three aces.

The Chargers were hampered by 26 attack errors in the match, hitting .031 as a team. Western New England posted a .247 hitting percentage with 31 kills and 11 errors in 81 attempts. The Golden Bears, who turned in a .244 mark in last night's 3-0 sweep of Curry College, have now hit above .200 in consecutive matches for the first time this season.

Trailing 18-17 in the first set, Western New England rattled off four straight points to regain a 21-18 lead. The Chargers took the next two points to pull back to within one, before a 4-0 Golden Bear run ended the frame. Kornberg followed up a pair of Colby-Sawyer attack errors with an ace, and Skibinski finished it off with a kill.

The Golden Bears came out of the gates on fire in the second set, winning the first six points and never looking back. Colby-Sawyer got as close as two (7-5) but was never able to close the gap, as Western New England extended its advantage to six (13-7) and eventually led by ten (22-12) on its way to a 2-0 set lead.

The third frame was the most competitive of the match, with the Chargers holding a 23-22 edge late. Consecutive kills by Lathrop and Armstrong allowed Western New England to regain a one-point lead, before Colby-Sawyer freshman outside hitter Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) tied the set at 24 with her fifth kill of the contest. A Colby-Sawyer service error brought the visitors to the brink of defeat, and a Charger attack error on the subsequent play ended the match.

Western New England (12-12, 4-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference) returns to the Alumni Healthful Living Center for its regular season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears will celebrate Senior Day before taking on Wentworth in a CCC contest. Colby-Sawyer (9-23, 6-0 North Atlantic Conference) hits the road again on Saturday for two matches at Plymouth State University.
