Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Sweep of Wentworth on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 31, 2015) - The Western New England University volleyball team capped its 2015 regular season slate with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-15), Senior Day victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology this afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

With the win, Western New England (13-12, 5-3 CCC) secures the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CCC Championship, and will host fifth-seeded Salve Regina University in a quarterfinal matchup when the tournament begins on Tuesday. Wentworth's season comes to a close at 10-17 overall and 1-7 in the CCC.

Playing in their final regular season home match, seniors Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) and Kelsey Armstrong (Groton, Conn.) finished with nine and seven digs, respectively, while Lathrop also added a pair of solo blocks and Armstrong totaled seven digs.

Sophomore middle hitter Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.) led the Western New England attack, hitting .318 with a match-high ten kills, her third consecutive 10+ kill effort and 12th overall this season. Skibinski also chipped in with two solo blocks and a pair of service aces as the Golden Bears swept their third straight match.

Sophomore outside hitter Alona Kornberg (Fair Lawn, N.J.) turned in a seven-kill, seven-dig performance to go with two aces, and freshman libero Emily Woodford (Belchertown, Mass.) registered a team-best ten digs to pace the defensive effort for the Golden Bears.

Junior setters Jessica Sincero (Verplanck, N.Y.) and Jenna Leuck (Dumont, N.J.) split the setting duties, with Sincero dishing out 13 assists and Leuck adding nine in addition to seven digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Meyers (Washington, D.C.) led the Leopards with five kills and ten digs, while junior setter Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) finished with nine assists and four digs.

Western New England came roaring out of the gates in the opening set this afternoon, as kills from Armstrong, Sincero and Skibinski helped power the Golden Bears to a 7-0 lead. Wentworth was never able to pull itself out of the early hole, as Western New England used another 7-0 run later in the set to open up a 16-4 lead. The Golden Bears cruised to a 14-point win in the opening frame on their way to a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was the most competitive of the contest, with the Leopards leading 10-5 early before Western New England rattled off six straight points, led by two kills each from Armstrong and Skibinski, to reclaim an 11-10 edge. The back and forth would continue as the set saw seven ties after that point, including 23-23, before Skibinski ended the frame with a kill and an ace.

Seeking its third straight sweep, the Golden Bears took control of the third set early, using a 6-0 run to open up a 12-5 lead. Wentworth got as close as four (16-12), but Western New England pulled away late to complete the three-set victory.
