Top-Seeded Roger Williams Defeats Volleyball in CCC Semifinals, 3-0

BRISTOL, R.I. (November 5, 2015) - The fourth-seeded Western New England University volleyball team fell to top-seeded Roger Williams University, 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-19) this evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship semifinals at Roger Williams' Recreation Center Gymnasium.

Western New England's season comes to a close at 14-13 (5-3 CCC), while Roger Williams (18-11, 8-0 CCC) advances to the CCC Championship final on Saturday against second-seeded Gordon College.

The Golden Bears appeared to be on their way to an opening set win this evening, as they held a commanding 17-10 lead following a 9-0 run, but Roger Williams would storm back to take the frame. The Hawks used a 5-0 run to pull within two (17-15), before eventually regaining the lead (22-21) on a kill by junior outside hitter Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.). Sophomore middle hitter Carly Skibinski (Milford, N.J.) and senior outside hitter Kelsey Armstrong (Groton, Conn.) recorded late kills for the Golden Bears, but it wasn't enough as Roger Williams held on for a three-point win.

Skibinski led the way for Western New England tonight, tallying a team-high nine kills (.280) to go with seven digs and three blocks. Armstrong followed up her career effort in the quarterfinals against Salve Regina with seven kills, while junior setter Jessica Sincero (Verplanck, N.Y.) finished with 11 assists and seven digs.

Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) powered Roger Williams with 14 kills and 13 digs, while McAniff added eight kills and 12 digs as the Hawks advanced to their seventh straight CCC title game.

Sincero set up Skibinski's kill for the opening point of the second set, but Roger Williams took control from there, winning the next four points and eventually opening up a 14-3 advantage. The Hawks posted a 25-12 win to claim a 2-0 set lead.

The Golden Bears put themselves in a strong position to extend the match, as they built up a 16-11 cushion midway through the third frame, but Roger Williams answered with a pivotal 8-0 run to go up 19-16. Western New England pulled back within one but was not able to get any closer, as the top-seeded Hawks closed out the match with a 25-19 win.
