Kelsey Armstrong & Olivia Lathrop Selected to Compete in NEWVA Senior Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 17, 2015) -
Seniors Kelsey Armstrong (Groton, Conn.) and Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) of the Western New England University volleyball team have been selected to compete in the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Senior Classic, it was announced today.
 
The NEWVA Senior Classic is an all-star match featuring college seniors from New England volleyball programs, who are selected based on a vote of coaches across the region. This year's contest will be held on Sunday, December 6th at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Boston.
 
Lathrop, who earned All-Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) first team honors in each of her two seasons with the Western New England volleyball program, finished the regular season ranked third in the CCC in hitting percentage (.281) and fifth in kills (252), with 2.60 per set. The middle hitter, who transferred from Division II Southern Connecticut State University following her sophomore season, also averaged 0.54 blocks and 0.47 digs/set.
 
She recorded 10+ kills in 11 of Western New England's 26 regular season matches, including totals of 19 and 18 against Eastern Connecticut State (9/29) and Salve Regina (9/24), respectively. Defensively, Lathrop posted season-highs of six digs against the Seahawks, and five blocks on two occasions (9/19 vs. Clark, 10/2 vs. Westfield State). She recorded at least two blocks in six consecutive matches and 17 times overall this fall.
 
Armstrong, an outside hitter from Groton, Conn., ranked third on Western New England with 2.13 kills per set this fall. She also averaged 0.70 digs per set while totaling five assists, three service aces, and nine block assists.
 
Armstrong recorded five 10+ kill efforts during the regular season, including in consecutive matches against the University of New England (9/26) and Eastern Connecticut State (9/29). She saved her best performance for Western New England's CCC Championship quarterfinal against Salve Regina (11/3), hitting .229 with a career-high 18 kills and five digs in a 3-2 Golden Bear victory.
 
Western New England went 13-12 (5-3 CCC) during the regular season and earned the No. 4 seed in the CCC Championship. The Golden Bears followed their thrilling win over the Seahawks with a 3-0 setback to eventual conference champion Roger Williams in the semifinals.
