Women's Wrestling Tripped Up Against MIT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 7, 2023) – The Western New England women's wrestling team was defeated in Saturday afternoon matches from the Alumni Healthful Living Center in exhibition action as the Engineers of Massachusetts Institute of Technology took down the Golden Bears. 

How it Happened:

With six matches on the schedule, five Golden Bears would compete against the Engineers, though would all come up just short in their matches. Greta Hobbs would dual with Viveca Pannell in the 130 lb. weight class, though would be swept in the match by a final score of 10-0. In the second match of the afternoon Western New England's Kendall Branchaud would compete in the 143 lb. weight class against Veloria Pennell and would pick up two points on the scoreboard for WNE after a takedown, though Pennell would come up with the win via pin, finalizing the score at 10-2. 
In the second-round matches, Western New England saw Sabrina Sedor and Samantha Groncki both fall in the 130 and 143 lb. matches, respectively. Victoria Orender would be tripped up for Western New England by the Engineers in the third round 130 lb. weight class while Branchaud would get her second attempt at the 143 lb. weight class in the third-round matches, though both would come up unsuccessful, leaving Western New England without a win on the afternoon. The Golden Bears would drop their first matchup of the New Year.
