Academic Support

Life Skills Mentoring Program
The Life Skills Mentoring program is a collaboration between the Athletic Department and the Academic Success Center. The program strives to support student-athlete development and enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience here at Western New England University. Freshman year, the student-athlete will be assigned a Life Skills Mentor – an upper-class student-athlete who will provide a guide to balancing the role of a college athlete with that of a successful student.  As a part of the Life Skills Mentoring program, all first-year student-athletes are required to attend one two-hour session of study hall each week.  The mandatory study halls offer an opportunity for these student-athletes to become successful academically and athletically through exploration of study skills, focused study time, and meetings with Life Skills Mentors. The program also includes mandatory workshops for first-year student-athletes.  The goal of these workshops is to provide first-year student-athletes with the necessary skills to be successful academically. Workshop topics include time management, study skills, registering for classes, and preparing for finals.

Note: Sophomore, junior, and senior student-athletes may be required to attend study hall depending on their academic performance in the previous semesters. All student-athletes on academic probation will be required to attend study hall as well as participate in the University’s Academic Progress Monitoring Program.

Faculty Fellow Program
As a component of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee collaborates with the University’s faculty to coordinate the Faculty Fellow Program. Student-athletes “recruit” interested faculty to serve a two-year term as a team faculty fellow. Fellows work directly with the teams to offer assistance, support, and generally serve to foster positive relationships between student-athletes and the faculty.
