Men’s Golf Tripped Up by Springfield College at City Cup Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 27, 2023) – The Western New England men's golf team dropped a dual match at the City Cup Championships on Thursday afternoon as cross-town rival Springfield College downed the Golden Bears on a 3.5-2.5 score. 

How it Happened:

Jeremy Burke defeated Springfield's Jack Difenderfer 4&3 in the second position to get Western New England their first win of the afternoon. Burke would birdie twice on the afternoon, coming on holes 11 and 15 at Country Club of Wilbraham to grab the 4&3 victory for the Golden Bears. 

Dylan Fortunato would square the 18 holes with Springfield's Damn Monks in a back and forth dual. Fortunato would get behind Monks early, bogeying holes four, five, six, and eight before mounting a comeback on the back nine, which started with a birdie putt on hole 12. From there, Fortunato would par five straight holes while his opponent would bogey five of the last six holes, finalizing the match as even. 

Robert DeFeo would help Western New England grab their second dual win of the afternoon after defeating Justin Acquarulo 4&3. DeFeo would birdie hole seven while finishing just two over par for the front nine. DeFeo would birdie one final time on hole 14, grabbing a score of two on the par three to secure the victory. 

Springfield College would take the other three matches on the afternoon as Ryne Salius, Ryan Schlehuber, and Benjamin Eskin would drop their matches as the Pride was win the City Cup Championships by a final score of 3.5-2.5.

Western New England will host both Springfield College and Westfield State University on Saturday, April 29 for the Western New England Golf Classic at Country Club of Wilbraham at 1:00 PM.
