Western New England Picked Third in CCC Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Golden Bears open 2020 campaign in South Carolina against Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, March 15.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 11, 2020) – The Western New England University men's tennis team has been picked to finish third in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released by the league office on Tuesday.

Nichols was selected as the preseason favorite, as the Bison received seven first place votes and finished with 67 points.

Roger Williams was picked second, grabbing one first place vote and 55 points. Endicott, Gordon, and Western New England tied for third place with 41 points.

The final three spots went to Wentworth (23), Salve Regina (14), and Curry (12).

Western New England finished the 2018-19 season with an 11-4 record, including 6-1 in CCC play.

The Golden Bears bring back All-CCC performers in senior David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.). Several key returners for the Golden Bears are junior Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.), senior Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.), and junior Matt Russell (Auburn, Mass.).

Kalmer, an All-CCC First Team selection in 2018-19, finished with an 11-2 record at No. 1 singles. Surawski was selected as an All-CCC Third Team selection in doubles.

Western New England's 2020 season begins with a neutral site game in South Carolina against Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, March 15. The Golden Bears will play several matches in South Carolina in mid-March, before opening their CCC slate at Nichols on Tuesday, March 31.
