Women’s Lacrosse Comes up Short in Back and Forth Contest at Mount Holyoke, 17-16

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (February 26, 2020) – The Western New England University women's lacrosse team fell to Mount Holyoke, 17-16, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at the MHC Turf and Track Complex.

Top Performers
Sophomore Abby Baldwin (Florence, Mass.) led the Lyons with five goals and two assists. Sophomore Allie Brown (Burlington, Vt.) and sophomore Caroline Flynn (Williamstown, Mass.) each scored four goals.

Sophomore Hannah Jarvis (Westfield, Mass.) scored four goals for the Golden Bears, while sophomore Liz Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and senior Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.) each scored three goals.

Game Review
Mazza opened the scoring, grabbing her first of the game just under two minutes into the game. The Lyons responded by scoring three straight goals, including two from Brown, taking a 3-1 lead. Senior Kaitlyn Hutter (Stamford, Conn.) stopped the Lyons' scoring by grabbing a goal at the 22:17 mark.

Mount Holyoke scored six of the next seven goals, three of which were from Baldwin, to take a 9-3 lead. Mazza and Jarvis scored a minute apart from each other to cut the Lyons' lead down to 9-5. Flynn grabbed a goal shortly before the end of the half to give Mount Holyoke a 10-5 lead going into the half. 

The Golden Bears came out strong to begin the second half, with Ruby scoring two goals and assisting on one to Jarvis shortly into the second half. Mount Holyoke took a 13-9 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game. Western New England answered by scoring three straight goals to cut the lead down to one.

After a goal from Baldwin, the Lyons went up 14-12. The Golden Bears received goals from Ruby, freshman Ally Hill (Storrs, Conn.), and Mazza to take a 15-14 lead. Mount Holyoke tied it, and then freshman Kylie Buchanan (Westfield, Mass.) gave Western New England the lead back. The Lyons scored two goals in the final minutes to take the win.

• Western New England scored on four of their five free position shots.
• Mount Holyoke held a 39-36 shot advantage.
