Women’s Lacrosse Pushes Smith Aside for First Win of the Season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 4, 2020) – The Western New England University women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season by defeating Smith College, 20-7, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

Top Performers
Sophomore Hannah Jarvis (Westfield, Mass.) led the Golden Bears with five goals. Junior Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.) and sophomore Liz Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.) both scored three goals and provided one assist.

Junior Kaitlin Chiu (Palo Alto, Calif.), senior Mercedes Woolley (Waitsfield, Vt.), and senior Bella Ferraro (Orange, Conn.) each scored two goals for the Pioneers.

Game Review
Miller opened the scoring for the Golden Bears just 15 seconds into the game. Woolley answered for the Pioneers just a couple minutes late to tie the game at 1-1. Western New England scored seven of the next eight goals over a 14 minute stretch to go up 8-2. Both teams scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, giving the Golden Bears an 11-5 lead going into halftime. 

Western New England came out strong yet again to begin the second half, scoring within the first 30 seconds, and scoring four within the first five minutes to go up 15-5. The Golden Bears kept the pressure going, as they would go on to score another five goals over the course of the remainder of the game.

• Western New England held a 35-22 shooting advantage.

Up Next
Western New England (1-3) will be off until they travel to Florida and take on Salem State on March 17. Smith (1-2) hosts Gordon on Saturday afternoon.
