WNE Golf Fails to Qualify for Spring Championship by One Stroke

BRISTOL, R.I. (September 29, 2022) – The Western New England men's golf team took to the course in hopes of advancing to the Spring CCC Championships, needing to place in the top four team to qualify. The Golden Bears finished in fifth place of eight teams, failing to qualify for the second straight season after qualifying the previous seven seasons in a row. 

How it Happened:

WNE's Robert DeFeo led the Golden Bears on Thursday afternoon, shooting eight over-part, which sat at 71. Defeo's score of 79 put him tied for ninth place overall in the event. Meeting DeFeo in ninth place was senior Ryne Salius, who also shot a 79 on the 18-hole course.  Jeremy Burke was just two strokes behind DeFeo and Salius, shooting an 81 for the round, capturing 15th place overall in the tournament. Ryan Schlehuber was also tied at 15th place after shooting an 81 overall at the course. Rounding out the foursome for Western New England was Dylan Fortunado, who finished tied for 30th place in the 40-man event, finalizing his score at 87 on the day. 

Nichols College would finish on top of the standings, finishing with a total score of 309 (+25) on the afternoon. Also qualifying for the Spring CCC Championships was Endicott College (311, +27), Suffolk University (317, +33) and Roger Williams University (319, +35). Endicott's Brady Burke finished in first place in the event, shooting an even 71 on the day.
