Men’s Lacrosse Comes up Short Against No. 2 Amherst

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 1, 2020) – The Western New England University men's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to Amherst, 16-8, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Pratt Field at Lehrman Staium.

Top Performers
Senior Jon Coffey (Summit, N.J.) scored five goals for the Mammoths. Senior Matt Solberg (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored two goals and provided three assists.

Junior Conor Tracy (Walpole, Mass.) scored two goals and provided two assists for the Golden Bears. Junior Jared Newall (Stratford, Conn.) scored two goals and added one assist, while senior Nick Gamba (Oysterbay, N.Y.) scored two goals.

Game Review
The Mammoths got onto the board first, when Coffey scored his first goal of the game two minutes into the first quarter. Newall responded shortly after to tie the game. The Mammoths went on to score three of the next four goals to take a 4-2 lead going into the second quarter. 

The Golden Bears scored four straight goals to start the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead. Western New England received two goals from Tracy as well as goals from Gamba and junior Kevin Faustich (Seymour, Conn.). The Mammoths scored in the last two minutes of the first half to cut the lead down to one. Amherst came out in the third quarter and scored five goals to take a 10-6 lead going into the final quarter.

The Mammoths added to their lead by scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Newall stopped the scoring run for Amherst with 6:50 remaining in the game. Gamba grabbed his second with just a few minutes left in the game.

• The Mammoths held a 54-29 shooting advantage.
