Cassandra Holmes named to All-Tournament Team
CORTLAND, N.Y. (August 31, 2019) – The Western New England University volleyball team dropped its final two matches at the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic on Saturday, falling to Rochester and Lebanon Valley at Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium.
Rochester 3, Western New England 2 (20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 15-13)
Playing in their first five-set match of the season, the Golden Bears lost a close 3-2 decision to Rochester in their early contest. After Western New England took a 1-0 set lead with a 25-20 triumph, the Yellowjackets tied the match with a 25-18 result in the second set. The Golden Bears pulled back ahead (2-1) courtesy of a 25-23 third set victory, but Rochester took the final two frames to pick up the win.
Western New England was led offensively by senior outside hitter Ashley Matthews (Salem, N.H.), who recorded a team-high 11 kills to go with 21 digs on the defensive side.
Senior setter Caitlyn Sibiskie (Rockfall, Conn.) racked up 35 assists and added 11 digs, while senior middle blocker Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) and junior outside hitter Hailey McDonnell (Methuen, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills each.
Freshman Emily Musso (Wallingford, Conn.) paced the defense with 21 digs, and senior Maria Duffy (Meriden, Conn.) finished with 14 digs and four aces.
Lebanon Valley 3, Western New England 1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-11, 25-19)
The Golden Bears got off to a strong start in their final match of the weekend, edging Lebanon Valley 25-23 to take a 1-0 set lead. The Dutchmen responded with a 25-12 win in the second frame, however, before taking a 2-1 advantage and eventually closing out the match with a 25-19 victory in set four.
Matthews led the Western New England offense with 11 kills and also added seven digs. Handling setting duties, Duffy compiled 28 assists to go with six digs.
Sophomore Taylor Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) keyed the defensive effort with 20 digs while contributing four service aces.
