Western New England Defeats UNE 3-1 for Third Straight Victory

Ferguson leads Golden Bears with career-high 17 kills

BIDDEFORD, Maine (September 22, 2018) – The Western New England University volleyball team posted a 3-1 (25-12, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23) victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Harold Alfond Forum.

Top Performers
Senior outside hitter Jenna Ferguson (Ellington, Conn.) led the way for the Golden Bears, hitting .303 with a career-high 17 kills and four digs.

Junior outside hitter Ashley Matthews (Salem, N.H.) added 13 kills, seven digs and five aces, while junior middle blocker Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) totaled 12 kills (.321) and three aces.

Sophomore setter Jenna McCormack (Nashua, N.H.) finished with 45 assists and six digs.

UNE was led by senior middle hitter Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) and junior outside hitter Katie Flynn (Merrimack, N.H.), who totaled 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

Game Review
Western New England cruised to a 25-12 victory in the opening set to claim a 1-0 advantage in the match. Leading 15-11 midway through the frame, the Golden Bears scored six straight points to pull away on their way to the win.

In the closely contested second set, Western New England used a kill and a service ace from Matthews to pull ahead late (23-21), before Ferguson finished the frame off with a kill.

The Nor'easters rebounded to take the third set 26-24 to stay alive, but the Golden Bears sealed the match with a 25-23 triumph in set four.

• Western New England has won three straight matches since opening the season 1-9.
• The Golden Bears posted a season-best .258 hitting percentage with 55 kills and 21 errors in 132 attempts.
