Holmes & Matthews lead Golden Bears with 14 and 13 kills, respectively
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 23, 2018) – The Western New England University volleyball team came up just short in a 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-11, 15-12) loss to Gordon College on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Top Performers
Juniors Cassandra Holmes (Ellington, Conn.) and Ashley Matthews (Salem, N.H.) accounted for 27 of Western New England's 48 kills as Holmes recorded 14 and Matthews added 13.
Sophomore setter Jenna McCormack (Nashua, N.H.) posted a double-double with 39 assists, ten digs and three aces, while freshman Taylor Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) totaled 15 digs.
Gordon was led by senior outside hitter Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.), who compiled a match-high 16 kills to go with 17 digs, two aces and two blocks.
Junior outside hitter Amanda Snyder (San Jose, Calif.) contributed 12 kills, ten digs and two aces for the Fighting Scots.
Game Review
Western New England got off to a strong start in the first set, as the Golden Bears won the first seven points with the help of four kills by Holmes. Gordon eventually battled back to tie the set at 13, and the two teams went back and forth until the Golden Bears were able to pull away late for a 25-22 win.
The second set saw the Fighting Scots bounce back with a 25-14 result to tie the match, before the Golden Bears regained a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 win in the third frame.
Gordon rolled to a 25-11 triumph in the fourth set to force a fifth and deciding frame, and the Fighting Scots rallied from a 10-7 deficit in the final set to complete their comeback victory.
Notes
• Gordon hit .241 for the match, while the Golden Bears turned in a .117 hitting percentage.
• Western New England is 2-2 in five set matches this season.
• Matthews (241) and Holmes (209) rank first and second on the team in kills, respectively.
