Ashley Matthews Receives CCC Player of the Week Recognition

Salem, N.H. native led Golden Bears to 2-0 week with 3.44 kills & 1.89 digs per set

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 24, 2018) – Senior captain Ashley Matthews (Salem, N.H.) of the Western New England University volleyball team has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Week for the first time in her career, the league office announced on Monday. 

Matthews led the Golden Bears to a 2-0 week with a pair of road CCC victories at Curry and the University of New England on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

The senior outside hitter posted a .259 attack percentage over the two matches with 3.44 kills and 1.89 digs per set.

Matthews opened the week with a career-high 17 kills and ten digs in a 3-2 win at Curry on Wednesday, before compiling 14 kills, seven digs and five aces in Saturday's 3-1 victory at UNE.

Through 13 matches this season, Matthews leads the Golden Bears with 2.50 kills per set and is tied for the team lead with 21 service aces (0.42/set). She also ranks second with 2.22 digs per set and has posted double-doubles (10+ kills & 10+ digs) in four of Western New England's last six matches.

The Golden Bears (4-9, 2-0 CCC) face Nichols at home on Tuesday night and travel to Clark on Thursday before hosting Eastern Connecticut and Westfield State for a tri-match on Saturday.
