Work Study Guidelines

The Athletic Department is one of the largest employers of student labor at Western New England offering opportunities to work day, evening, and weekend shifts. The Department offers employment opportunities in the areas of fitness, strength and conditioning, intramurals, contest management, lifeguarding, as well as opportunities to work as office assistants, team managers, and sports information assistants. The Department hires both student-athletes and non-student athletes. Student-athletes are expected to exhibit responsibility and leadership in these positions with the understanding that they are extensions of the comprehensive excellence that serves to identify our Athletic Family.



Athletic Department Statement

The Athletic Department relies on student workers in all facets of operation and expects a conscientious attempt on the student’s part to be a good employee. Student workers are expected to be dependable, prompt, responsible and honest.
Athletic Department employment is, after all, optional. Students need to balance their academic and extracurricular activities with their work assignments. Illness, examinations, participation in athletics or other commitments does not necessarily excuse a student from work. 

Employment Opportunities 

Work Study Contract

Work-study students are hired through the Athletic Department to perform various duties in the AHLC. Students will be assigned to specific jobs but you may be asked to perform duties in other areas as well.

 - Schedules will be made around your class schedule.
 - Each person will be scheduled for as many hours as possible.
 - All Student/Athletes with Work-study will have contest management responsibilities in addition to their normal assignments.
 - Due to the number of work study grants not all students will be placed.

Attendance 

The athletic department is dependent upon student workers. Student Employees 
who are repeatedly absent or tardy can be subject to dismissal. Students must notify their supervisor if they need to miss scheduled work hours. Students are responsible for getting a replacement to cover their assigned work-study hours, No EXCEPTIONS. No Shows or Call Offs will be will be monitored and may result in immediate dismissal. 

Students do not set their own schedules. Schedules are posted in each area. All areas are assigned a supervisor; it is the student’s responsibility to know their hours of work and the name of their supervisor. All hours are monitored and misuse of the time clock is a serious offense. Student employees must not be clocked in while in class, team lifts, team practices, or any other activity. 

WORK STUDY IS A FEDERALLY FUNDED PROGRAM. FRAUD OR MISUSE OF FUNDS CAN BE PUNISHABLE BY FINES AND IMPRISONMENT. TAKE YOUR JOB SERIOUSLY.

Personal Appearance

Your appearance directly reflects the image of the Athletic Department be clean, neat and respectable. No hats may be worn while working in the AHLC.

Professionalism

Student employees are expected to behave professionally at all times and to avoid confrontations with fellow employees, participants, (faculty, staff, students, guest) and spectators.

Evaluations

Employee evaluation is and on-going process, and individual evaluations will be scheduled by supervisors as needed. Employees will be given frequent feedback on job performance, good or bad. 

Grounds for Dismissal

The Director will make all decisions regarding employee termination. Sufficient grounds for dismissal include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Misrepresentation on employment applications and or job interviews.
2. Absenteeism without notification (either “Calling Off” or “No Show”).
3. Insubordination.
4. Poor job performance.
5. Theft or unauthorized use of AHLC property or funds.
6. Coming to work while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
7. Use of drugs and/or alcohol while on the job.
8. Repeated Tardiness.
9. Abuse of Time Clock.

Telephone Use

Workstation telephones are to be used for business purposes only. Telephones may not be used for personal calls. Cell phones are not to be used except for emergencies and calls must be brief. 

Ipods


The use of Ipods and personal music players as well as lap tops is strictly prohibited.

Payroll Information

All student employees must clock in and out. Time Clock problems should be brought to the attention of the work study supervisor. 


WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU, THE STUDENT EMPLOYEE:

Positive Attitude, Commitment, Dedication, Punctuality, Team-Work, Proper Attire, Accountability, Professionalism, Open Communication, Respect for your supervisors/co-workers

Know your jobs responsibilities. Check the posted duties daily. Keep your area clean and free of clutter. Show initiative; ask if there is any thing that needs to be completed before your shift ends.
