Western New England Suffers 12-2 Loss to Case Western Reserve

Grignano & Nussbaum drive in one run each for Golden Bears

LEXINGTON, S.C. (March 16, 2019) – The Western New England University baseball team suffered a 12-2 setback to Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon at Lexington County Stadium.

Top Performers
Western New England's two runs were driven in by sophomore Sebby Grignano (Meriden, Conn.) and junior Zac Nussbaum (Bridgewater, Mass.), who recorded RBI hits in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.

Case Western senior infielder Jacob Kucia (Strongsville, Ohio) powered the Spartans with a 5-for-5 effort at the plate. Kucia walked, doubled twice and scored three runs.

Sophomore Benjamin Stawicki (Aurora, Ohio) turned in a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI and two runs scored.

Game Review
Case Western Reserve got off to a fast start, as sophomore catcher Jake Ryan (Chatham, Ill.) belted a solo home run to right field in the top of the first inning.

The Spartans added one run in the second and two in the third, before opening up a 6-0 lead in the fourth with the help of RBI singles from senior Rocco Maue (Moon Township, Pa.) and Kucia.

Case Western Reserve continued to build on its advantage with three more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

The Golden Bears broke through in the bottom of the seventh, when Grignano singled to center field, scoring sophomore Jake Balderston (Hadley, Mass.).

Both teams pushed across one more run in the eighth, with Western New England's coming on an RBI double to right center field by Nussbaum.

Notes
• The two teams stranded a combined 18 runners on base – 10 for Case Western and eight for Western New England.
• Seniors Jeremy Morris (Montrose, N.Y.) and Andrew Foley (Wilbraham, Mass.) both pitched scoreless innings of relief for the Golden Bears.
