Bob Hamel Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

CoSIDA Release

Southwick, Mass. native earns this honor for second consecutive year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 14, 2019) – Senior pitcher Bob Hamel (Southwick, Mass.) of the Western New England University baseball team has received CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the second consecutive season, the organization announced last week.

CoSIDA's Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Hamel is one of just two pitchers and 11 players overall selected to the District 1 team, which includes schools in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The Southwick, Mass. native is among two representatives from Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) institutions.

Hamel, who will graduate this Saturday with a degree in electrical engineering, holds a 3.83 cumulative GPA through the fall semester. He is a Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society inductee and was selected as the CCC's Scholar-Athlete award winner. Additionally, Hamel completed an internship with BAE Systems and will begin working for the company in June.

On the mound, Hamel went 5-1 in nine starts this season with a 3.38 earned run average and 48 strikeouts in 72.0 innings. He matched his career-high with five complete games this spring, going the distance with six strikeouts in Western New England's 6-2 win over Nichols in the CCC Tournament on May 3.

Hamel will graduate as one of the top pitchers in program history with a career record of 26-4, a 2.19 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 238.2 innings of work. He logged 17 complete game efforts in 44 appearances (33 starts) and even picked up four saves out of the bullpen.

A four-time All-CCC honoree, Hamel was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2016 before garnering CCC Pitcher of the Year accolades as a junior last spring, when he led NCAA Division III with a 0.95 ERA. Hamel is also a three-time All-Region performer.

With his CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Hamel now advances to the Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third team Academic All-America honorees will be announced in June.
