Western New England Drops Non-Conference Contest to Eastern Connecticut, 6-3

Loparco posts fourth consecutive multi-hit performance

MANSFIELD, Conn. (April 16, 2019) – The Western New England University baseball team fell to Eastern Connecticut State University, 6-3, on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

Top Performers
Senior shortstop Alex Loparco (Riverside, Conn.) led the Golden Bears offensively, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Senior centerfielder Erik Lacaire (Worcester, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while senior outfielder Ben LaCroix (Branford, Conn.) and sophomore infielder Sebby Grignano (Meriden, Conn.) recorded one hit each.

Eastern Connecticut senior outfielder Alexander White (West Hartford, Conn.) turned in a 3-for-4 effort with a double, a triple, one RBI and two runs scored to pace the Warriors. Senior Alex Parkos (Meriden, Conn.) added two hits, while junior Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center, Conn.) drove in two runs.

Game Review
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, when White led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming in to score on freshman Noah Pantamuro's (Bristol, Conn.) RBI single to center.

In the bottom of the fourth, Eastern Connecticut increased its lead to 4-0 as Lefevre recorded a two-run single and senior William Coleman (Northford, Conn.) added a sacrifice fly.  

Western New England broke through in the top of the fifth with three runs on three hits and two errors. Grignano singled to left with one out, and senior Brian Valeriano (Stratford, Conn.) reached on an error before Loparco got the Golden Bears on the board with an RBI single to center field. Following an Eastern pitching change, Lacaire came up next and delivered a two-run double to left center, cutting the Golden Bears' deficit to one.

Eastern Connecticut gave itself some breathing room in the bottom of the seventh, however, as White recorded an RBI triple and junior John Mesagno (Tappan, N.Y.) added a sacrifice fly to give the Warriors a 6-3 cushion, which stood as the final margin.

• Western New England was outhit by Eastern Connecticut, 10-7.
• Loparco has posted 13 multi-hit performances this season, including each of the past four games.

Western New England (17-9) returns home tomorrow to host New England College at 3:30 p.m., while Eastern Connecticut (13-13) travels to Rensselaer for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
