Golden Bears Fall to Becker in Overtime, 3-2

O'Dea scores both Western New England goals

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 1, 2019) – The Western New England University ice hockey team fell to Becker College, 3-2 in overtime on Friday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Worcester Ice Center.

Top Performers
Western New England senior Matt O'Dea (Orland Park, Ill.) scored both goals for the Golden Bears, while junior Corey Kennedy (Clemmons, N.C.) recorded a pair of assists.

Junior goaltender Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) made 30 saves on the 33 shots he faced in net.

Becker freshman forward Jason Diamond (Lakeville, Conn.) tallied the game-winner for the Hawks, while sophomore Romain Wild (Mex, Switzerland) and freshman Jake Cagnina (South Berwick, Maine) also found the back of the net.

Junior netminder Grant Martens (Bloomington, Minn.) finished with 43 saves, including 19 in the second period.

Game Review
Becker opened the scoring 7:15 into the contest when sophomore Charles Costello (Philadelphia, Pa.) found Cagnina for a power play goal.

Western New England got on the board with 4:20 left in the period, as Kennedy and senior Steve Beck (Milton, N.Y.) set up O'Dea for the game-tying goal.

The Golden Bears then pulled ahead on O'Dea's second of the night with just 1:21 remaining in the second period, but the Hawks answered 56 seconds later courtesy of Wild to knot the score for the second time heading into the third period.

Neither team was able to score during the final 20 minutes of regulation, when Western New England outshot Becker 12-7.

The Hawks were able to come away with the win, however, as Diamond notched the overtime game-winner 2:51 into the extra frame with an assist from freshman Zachary Bettmeng (Sioux Falls, S.D.).

• Western New England outshot Becker 45-33 overall, while the Hawks held a 46-30 advantage in the faceoff circle.
• O'Dea has a team-high 22 points this season with 13 goals and nine assists.
