Hines scores two goals, including game-winner in third period
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 2, 2019) – Senior Tyler Hines (North Haven, Conn.) scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period as the Western New England University ice hockey team earned a 3-2 victory over Becker College on Saturday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Olympia Ice Center.
Top Performers
Hines powered the Western New England offense with a pair of goals, bringing his season total to four. Classmate Matt O'Dea (Orland Park, Ill.) also found the back of the net, while sophomore Ryan Price (Brick, N.J.) was credited with two assists.
Junior goaltender Kyle Carducci (Rocky Hill, Conn.) improved to 6-5 this season with 23 saves on 25 shots.
Becker sophomore forward Charles Costello (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted a two-point effort with a goal and an assist, while senior Corey Schafer (Johnstown, Pa.) also scored for the Hawks.
Junior goalie Cody Foster (Saugus, Calif.) finished with 39 saves between the pipes for the visitors.
Game Review
Hines got the Golden Bears on the board midway through the first period with assists from Price and senior Carlos Ross (Brockport, N.Y.).
Western New England doubled its advantage with 5:51 left in the opening frame when O'Dea took a pass from senior Steve Beck (Milton, N.Y.) and notched his team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Schafer scored the only goal of the second period just over a minute in, and Costello then tied the contest 20 seconds into the third period.
The Golden Bears regained the lead at the 6:13 mark, however, on Hines' second goal of the night. Western New England was able to hold on the rest of the way, as Carducci turned aside the final nine shots he faced to secure the win.
Notes
• Western New England outshot Becker 42-25, including 24-7 in the first period.
• Neither team was able to capitalize on its power play chances, as the Golden Bears went 0-for-5 with a man advantage and the Hawks were 0-for-3.
• Western New England held a 48-33 advantage in the faceoff circle, led by O'Dea and Ross, who won 12 and ten draws, respectively.
