Women's Basketball Blow Past Endicott, 73-50

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 5, 2023) – The Western New England women's basketball team faced another CCC opponent, the Endicott Gulls, at home where the outcome was 73-50, Golden Bears.

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-6, 4-1 CCC
  • Endicott College: 4-8, 2-3 CCC

How It Happened: Endicott's first drive earned them a basket at the start of this ball game which they soon made 4-0. Emma Kahn put the Golden Bears on the scoreboard and Lindsey Carey added a foul shot. The Gulls followed it up with two of their own from the line. Colleen Furlong tied it up back on the foul line before Endicott took another lead. Emma Elrod hit a top of key three-point shot for WNE to have their first game lead in this quarter. The Golden Bears entered the second leading Endicott 14-10.

To increase the lead the WNE ended the first with, Shaina Cooney scored a hoop with WNE controlling the ball for the opening seconds of the quarter. They got up to an eight-point lead before the Gulls started working their way to close the score gap. Three made layups and a free-throw brought them just down one, 20-19, to the Golden Bears. After a small break in scoring drives, Abby Garaban forced one in with a hard trip to the basket, two foul shots for Endicott kept it close. Caitlyn Hunt came into the ball game to give WNE two quick baskets, Erin Reen added one, Garaban with another for them to lead by nine, 30-21. Endicott got a three-pointer in just over a minute, and Hunt hit a jumper just before the half for WNE to still lead 32-24.

Free throws opened the second half for the Golden Bears to make it a 10-point ballgame. The Gulls closed the difference also on the foul line until Furlong and Carey had consecutive layups to make it 38-25. Cooney had back-to-back baskets and WNE had a small control over the game five minutes through the quarter. Endicott made another basket, but two threes from Kahn and two on the line from Hunt made it more of a Golden Bear game. The Gulls had a three to match one of Kahn's and it was answered with another layup from Carey and a jumper from Hunt. WNE went into the fourth ahead of the Gulls by 20, 54-34.

The Golden Bears maintained their lead throughout the fourth. After a foul shot from the Gulls, the Golden Bears seven straight points that ended with a three from Reen. Endicott knocked in a three and scoring was back-and-forth for the teams while WNE held their lead. The Golden Bears closed out the game with ease, beating the Gulls 73-50.

On the Court:

  • The Golden Bears shot 43.9 percent from the paint, 33.3 percent from three-point line, 55.0 percent from the foul line, while gathering 43 rebounds, 13 assists, and six steals.
  • The Gulls had 30.4 percent from the floor, 20.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 81.3 percent from the free throw line while grabbing 31 rebounds, seven assists, four steals, and two blocks.
  • The Golden Bears were led by Caitlyn Hunt who had 12 points off the bench, adding seven rebounds. She was 5-9 in field goals and 2-2 on the line.
  • Abby Garaban and Shaina Cooney added 11 points, and Lindsey Carey grabbed 10 rebounds for the night.
