Women's Basketball Drops 58-50 Decision to Gordon College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 18, 2023) – The Western New England women's basketball team where home for their face off with the Gordon College Fighting Scots who came back to defeat the Golden Bears 58-50.

Records:

  • Western New England: 8-8, 6-3 CCC
  • Gordon College: 7-9, 5-4 CCC

How It Happened: A slow first minute of play before the Golden Bears Lindsey Carey put up two points with a layup. Gordon evened up the score quickly. Emma Elrod's two free-throws lead to a WNE run of nine points with six coming from Emma Kahn's three pointers. The fighting Scots answered with a three of their own for a score of 11-5 under three minutes in the first. Caitlyn Hunt added back-to-back layups, and Paige Winter ended the quarter with another three for the Golden Bears to lead 18-9.

The Fighting Scots mounted their comeback in the second quarter. WNE was the first on the scoreboard with a layup. Gordon put up a foul shot and a layup, Elrod responded with a layup of her own. A three from Gordon closed the score gap to just four. Carey slowed down the comeback with a jumper, but the final couple of baskets of the half belonged to the Fighting Scots. They outscored the Golden Bears 16-8 in this quarter and only trailed by one, 26-25 after the first half of play.

Trying to keep their lead up, the Golden Bears Colleen Furlong knocked in a three to open quarter three. Gordon came down with a fast break layup, another jumper for Furlong, and then the Fighting Scots took a lead with 6:08 on the clock after two layups and a foul shot, 32-31. Hunt's trip to the hoop put WNE back on top, but Gordon took the lead right back and held it for three minutes of play, leading by as many as three. A top of the key three-pointer from Abby Garaban tied the score with twenty-two seconds in the third, and another three at the buzzer for Kahn gave WNE another game lead 41-40 entering the last 10-minutes of the ballgame.

Again, trying to capitalize on their lead, the Golden Bears took the first two points of the quarter. The Fighting Scots kept the Golden Bears off the scoreboard for a few plays while building up another three-point lead. Furlong made it another one-point game from the free-throw line, but a 10-point run for Gordon gave them the advantage that the Golden Bears couldn't fight back from. WNE did not hit a basket until the final twenty seconds of the game, and they fell to Gordon 58-50.

On the Court:

  • The Golden Bears shot 33.9 percent from the paint, 26.9 percent from three-point line, 75.0 percent from the foul line, while gathering 42 rebounds, 15 assists, four steals, and three blocks.
  • The Fighting Scots had 34.5 percent from the floor, 10.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 78.3 percent from the free throw line while grabbing 36 rebounds, eight assists, and eight steals.
  • The Golden Bears were led by Emma Kahn who had 11 points. She went 4-14 from inside the paint and 3-10 from beyond the arc.
  • Lindsey Carey added 10 rebounds and Abby Garaban recorded six assists.
