Kahn's Hot Shooting Lifts WNE Women's Basketball over Curry

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 14, 2023) – The Western New England women's basketball team hosted the Curry College in a double-header lineup with Men's basketball. The Golden Bears defeated the Curry 60-50 after 4 quarters of play.

How It Happened: Western New England hit the scoreboard early in the ballgame with Emma Kahn making the first five points. Curry had worked their way to even up the score 7-7, almost halfway through the quarter, and got a one-point lead after a made layup. The Golden Bears had a run of six following Shaina Cooney, Lindsey Carey, and Colleen Furlong all made consecutive layups. WNE took back the lead and kept the Curry off the scoreboard for three minutes of play until they knocked two in at the free-throw line. The Golden Bears led after the first 15-11.

Off her own offensive rebound, Caitlyn Hunt shot in a layup to get the second quarter rolling. Curry jacked up a three-pointer to make it a three-point game and brought it within one before Carey popped in a mid-range jumper. Curry stole another game lead five minutes remaining in quarter two with a layup for a score of 22-19. The Golden Bears, fighting from behind now got down 28-21 to the Curry and did not put in a basket for two and a half minutes. Lilly Hedge broke the scoreless streak with a jump shot, and Hunt had a nice block to keep Curry off the board before entering halftime. Western New England trailed 28-23 at the half.

Curry first made a bucket in the second half. Kahn made two three pointers early in the quarter to tie the score, and Emma Elrod knocked in the three that took back the lead for the Golden Bears, 33-30. The score lead changed a few more times between the teams. Another three for WNE gave them a four-point lead. Elrod added some more points from the foul line and the Golden Bears led the Curry 42-38 before the final quarter.

Western New England, hot from beyond the arc, Lindsay Orbann put up a three and Erin Reen hit her second three for the day to give WNE a 10-point lead. Kahn swooshed another three before Curry scored in this quarter. The finally knocked in a layup accompanied by a foul shot, and the Golden Bears answer with a three from Abby Garaban, and a jumper from Carey for their largest lead of the day, 56-41. Curry started to hit some threes and some free throws to lower the score gap, but WNE held out and won by 10 against the Curry, 60-50.

On the Court:

  • The Golden Bears shot 35.2 percent from the paint, 40.9 percent from three-point line, 65.0 percent from the foul line, while gathering 57 rebounds, 14 assists, four steals, and two blocks.
  • Curry had 28.3 percent from the floor, 11.1 percent from beyond the arc, and 81.3 percent from the free throw line while grabbing 26 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.
  • The Golden Bears were led by Emma Kahn who had 16 adding four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. She went 6-11 from inside the paint and 4-6 from beyond the arc.
  • Abby Garaban added 15 rebounds, seven points, and two assists.
