Elrod Drops 16 Points in Fifth Consecutive Win to Guide Western New England over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. (January 7, 2023) – The Western New England women's basketball team traveled to Newport, R.I. to face the Salve Regina Seahawks. The Golden Bears defeated the Seahawks 50-41 after four quarters of play.

How It Happened: A tie score to start the first for almost four minutes of play until a Golden Bear Technical foul put Salve Regina up by two. After a foul shot taken by Shaina Cooney, Emma Elrod put up a layup for WNE to take a 5-4 lead. A layup for the Seahawks on the other end of the court, then there was three minutes of play where neither team hit a basket until Lindsay Orbann swished in a corner three-pointer in the final seconds of the first, and for the Golden Bears took another lead 8-6.

Caitlyn Hunt shot in a layup and a jumper to increase WNE's lead by six. There was a foul shot from Salve, a minute of no score, then a layup and a three from Abby Garaban to take a 10-point lead 5:38 in the half, 17-7. The Seahawks and the Golden Bears went blow for blow exchanging baskets while the Golden Bears held their 10-point lead. Elrod had back-to-back baskets for WNE to be ahead 12, 26-14. The Seahawks brought it back within 10, Colleen Furlong with a trip to the hoop, back to a 12-point game. Another trip to the line for Salve and a jumper ended the first half with the Seahawks trailing the Golden Bears 28-19.

The Seahawks brought the Golden Bears lead down to five with their first couple of baskets of the second half. A jumper and a foul shot from Furlong brought it back up, then Salve got it back down to four, 31-27. After a couple of plays, Emma Kahn hit a three, two from the foul line from Garaban, and two baskets knocked in by Elrod, had the Golden Bears back on top by double-digits. A three on the other end for Salve made it 42-35, and to close the third quarter out, Elrod had a jumper go in for WNE to still lead 44-35.

Lindsey Carey made the first two shots of the fourth quarter to take the Golden Bears ahead by 13. The Seahawks made it an 11-point game. There was a series of plays that went scoreless until the final 2:32 of the game when Elrod hit another layup, 50-37. Salve pushed it back down to nine, but the clock expired on the game with WNE earning the win, 50-41.

On the Court:

  • The Golden Bears shot 33.9 percent from the paint, 16.7 percent from three-point line, 50.0 percent from the foul line, while gathering 36 rebounds, 15 assists, five steals, and one block.
  • The Seahawks had 27.0 percent from the floor, 14.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 62.5 percent from the free throw line while grabbing 32 rebounds, 10 assists, four blocks, and three steals.
  • The Golden Bears were led by Emma Elrod who had 16 points off the bench, adding four rebounds and a block.
  • Abby Garaban added nine rebounds, seven points, and seven assists.
