Holt, McGlynn & Murphy Tally in Non-Conference Victory over Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. (January 17, 2023) – The Western New England women's ice hockey team claimed victory on a rare weekday matinee, defeating the Raiders of Rivier University by a final score of 4-1 from James Memorial Skating Rink.

Records:

  • Western New England: 11-3-2
  • Rivier University: 4-10-2

How it Happened:

Western New England took control of the game from the puck drop and never looked back. The Golden Bears grabbed the first goal of the game just eight minutes into the contest when Maggie Holt found the back of the net for the second time on the season. Holt would be assisted by Maddie Pope, who grabbed her sixth assist on the season and Kelly Yorkey, who notched her fifth assist of the season.

The Golden Bears would dominate the shots on goal in the opening frame, taking 15 to Rivier's five. With just over three minutes remaining in the period, Western New England would get on the scoreboard again as Erin McGlynn would tally her first goal of the season to extend the Golden Bears lead to two. McGlynn would be assisted by Zoe Galanoudis on the goal, who collects her second assist of the season. The Golden Bears would take a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

The Golden Bears would continue to route the Raiders in the shots on goal department, taking 18 total shots on goal in the frame while Rivier shot just seven times towards goal. Luciana Robertelli, who made her third start of the season, turned away all seven shots in the period and all 12 shots in the opening 40 minutes of the contest. With five minutes remaining in the second frame, Western New England would draw an interference minor on Rivier, which ended up being the only powerplay chance for either side in the game. WNE would make the Raiders pay for the chance as Maggie Holt would steam a shot passed Rivier keeper Madelyn Morgan to grab her second goal of the game and third overall on the season, which gave Western New England a 3-0 lead. Maddy Tucker and Alyssa Murphy each picked up assists on the WNE goal, Tucker grabbing her sixth assist of the year while Murphy tied the team lead with her 12th assist on the year. Western New England would total 32 shots in the first two periods of the game, taking a 3-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

Rivier would find their offensive game toward the midway point of the third period and would find the back of the net when Lauren Crocker tapped home her first goal of the season, cutting the Golden Bears advantage to two. Crocker would be assisted by Caeli Reed and Chiara Skeels to get the Raiders on the board. From there, Western New England would take control of the contest and would finish the game with one final goal, an unassisted mark from Alyssa Murphy, who picked up her fifth goal of the season and second point of the game to give the Golden Bears their three-goal lead back, a lead they would hold for the final 3:16 of the game as Western New England would defeat Rivier by a final score of 4-1.
