Frappier Tallies Eventual Game Winning Goal in 4-1 Win over Husson

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 4, 2022) - The Western New England Golden Bears returned to the pitch on Saturday afternoon for a matinee matchup with the Eagles of Husson University. WNE looked to continue their success from yesterday's matchup against Keene State.

Records:

  • Western New England: 2-1-0
  • Husson University: 1-1-0

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears would put the pressure on right from the start with a shot from Allyson Hill that sailed right of the net. WNE would then follow it up with two more shots, and one by Isabella Montalvo would glance off the woodwork. WNE would continue to apply pressure, and in the 15th minute, Hill would put the first shot on net, but Husson GK Hannah Kenney would make a nice save. Husson would take their first shot in the 21st minute, but it would slide left. In the 25th minute, WNE's efforts would be seen as Lindsay Reidy would receive a pass from Allison Bruehwiler and send it into the back of the net to put the Golden Bears up 1-0. Both sides would trade shots on net that the goalies saved. In the 37th minute, WNE would find themselves with another opportunity for a goal, and Julia Frappier would not be denied as she sent home the second goal of the day for the Golden Bears and her first of the season. The half would end with a shot by Brynn Murphy that Kenney saved.

WNE would control the first half with 13 shots to Husson's 5, with two of the Husson shots being on net and WNE getting four on net. WNE would commit three fouls to Husson's one and would have five corners to Husson's one, but none of the corners would be capitalized on. Reidy and Frappier's goals would be the difference-makers in the first half, as the half would end with the Golden Bears up 2-0 and completely dominating play.

The second half would start just like the first half with WNE pressure as Bruehwiler sent multiple shots toward the net that were parried away by Kenney; however, Bruehwiler would not be denied and would send home a second opportunity ball right past the stretched arms of Kenney. The Golden Bears were now ahead by a score of 3-0. Husson would find their grit as they would turn around and pressure WNE heavily to the point that a ball would be sent off of a WNE hand in the penalty box for a handball penalty shot. Husson would take it, but WNE GK Molly McLaughlin would make an outstanding diving save on the left side of the goal to deny Husson briefly. Less than a minute later, Husson would get their opening goal when Mackenzie Lambert found herself with the ball in the WNE penalty box and would send it past McLaughlin into the back of the net in the top right corner to make it 3-1.

The teams would trade shots for many minutes until WNE would have two shots on net that made Kenney work for the saves, but she would deny WNE. After that, the teams would go back and forth with possession, and not many optimal scoring opportunities would arise until the 83rd minute when Samantha Vitka would receive a pass from Gabby Sansone and bury the ball in the back of the net to extend the Golden Bears' lead to 4-1. That would prove to be the game's last goal, and only a Vitka shot to the lower left corner would be as close to another goal for either team.

WNE would continue their domination of the shot sheet with 17 shots to Husson's six and would have a total of 30 shots for the day compared to Husson's 11. McLaughlin would make four saves on five shots that got to her, including the penalty shot. Kenney would make 12 saves for Husson, with four goals getting past her. WNE would have nine corners on the day to Husson's three. The Golden Bears would get their second weekend win with the 4-1 win.
