Women’s Soccer Takes on Top Seeded Misericordia University in NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championships Second Round

DALLAS, Pa. (November 12, 2022) – Following their 2-0 win over York College (Pa.), the Western New England women's soccer team will take on the hosting Cougars of Misericordia University on Sunday evening for a chance to advance to the third-round game next weekend.

Last Time Out (Western New England):

Western New England was victorious in their last time out in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating York College (Pa.) 2-0, securing the team's first ever NCAA tournament win. Western New England would open the scoring in the 15th minute when a corner kick by Allison Bruehwiler would bounce around in the box before Isabella Montalvo would find the loose ball and pounce on it to give WNE an opening 1-0 lead. Western New England outshot York 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes with GK Molly McLaughlin making one save.

In the second half, Western New England would see the pace of play pick up and the Spartans would take their chances, though McLaughlin stood tall between the pipes for WNE. In the 72nd minute, the Golden Bears would be fouled inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Alison VanVolkenburg would deliver a right footed boot into the top right corner of the net, fooling the York College goalkeeper to give Western New England a 2-0 lead. That lead would stand, and the Golden Bears would celebrate their first ever NCAA win in program history. The Golden Bears come the first team in the CCC to win a first-round game since 2016.

Last Time Out (Misericordia University):

The Cougars had no problem defating Marywood University on their own field, taking down the Pacers 6-0. The Cougars of Misericordia would pepper Marywood with offense all evening long, outshooting Marywood 41-0 in the 90 minutes of play, including 18-0 on goal. Colleen Kinsella opened the scoring the MU in the 34thminute and the Cougars did not look back. Three minutes later, MU would see a penalty kick opportunity and Brenna Field would capitalize, giving Misericordia a 2-0 lead, which stood at the half. Misericordia would break the game wide open in the early goings of the second half when their leading goal scorer Emma Sweitzer tucked in her 23rd goal of the season on a penalty kick just 45 seconds into the frame to go ahead 3-0. Kate Field, Kaylee Sturans, and Mary Katharine Peters would all find the back of the net for Misericordia in their 6-0 win over Marywood in the opening round to move into the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Cougars will move into the NCAA Tournament's second round for the second straight season after defeating Brynn Athen University in the first round a season ago, while also defeating Middlebury University in the second round before bowing out in the third round of the tournament. The Cougars are riding a 13-game win streak heading into today's game with WNE.
