Women’s Basketball Tops Wentworth in Regular Season Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 19, 2020) – The Western New England University women's basketball team defeated Wentworth, 70-57, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Wednesday evening at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Top Performers
Senior forward Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) led the Golden Bears with 19 points. Seniors Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) and Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Leopards received 10 points from junior Erin Morton (Norway, Maine).

Game Review
The Golden Bears came out strong in the first quarter. Western New England took an early 7-5 with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter. The Golden Bears went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter, taking a 17-5 lead into the second quarter.

Western New England pushed the lead to 30-13 after a made layup from Carlson with 4:24 remaining in the first half. After trading baskets for the rest of the half, the Leopards cut the lead down to 12 after a 3-pointer from junior Kayla Kelley (Boston, Mass.) with 0:34 remaining in the half.

The Golden Bears pushed the lead up to 23, their largest lead of the night, after a made layup from Carlson midway through the third quarter gave Western New England a 50-27 lead.

The Leopards chipped away at the lead, cutting the Golden Bear lead down to 14 after a made layup from junior Molley Duclos (Greenfield, Mass.) with 4:23 remaining in the game. The Golden Bears kept the Leopards at bay down the stretch to close out the regular season with a win.

• Western New England has locked up first place in the CCC standings.

Up Next
Western New England (21-4) will host their semifinal matchup in the conference tournament next Thursday, February 27, with their opponent to be determined. Wentworth (8-16) closes out their regular season at Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon.
