Women’s Basketball Kicks off Season with a 60-38 Victory over Nichols

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 5, 2021) – The Western New England University women's basketball team defeated Nichols, 60-38, in their season opener on Friday evening at the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Top Performers
Senior Emily Scurka led the way for the Golden Bears 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Abby Garaban scored nine points off the bench while grabbing six rebounds. Senior Lauren Chadwick and sophomore Lexi Leon each scored eight points.

Freshman Abrianna Vazquez and sophomore Leandra Ortiz led the Bison in scoring with 18 and 12 respectively.

Game Review
Western New England jumped out to a big lead early, as junior Grace Fisher made a layup with 3:52 remaining in the first quarter to give the Golden Bears a 10-0 lead. The Golden Bears ended the first quarter with a commanding 14-2 lead.

The combined efforts of Vazquez and Ortiz cut the Golden Bear lead down to seven early in the third quarter. Western New England answered with a 13-6 run to push the lead back up to 14. The Golden Bears dominated the second the half, outscoring the Bison 34-20 to come away with the victory.

Western New England (1-0) and Nichols (1-2) will square off again on Saturday at Nichols. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
