Golden Bears to Host 22nd Annual Athletics Golf Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (August 12, 2021) – The Western New England Athletics Department is set to host the 22nd Annual Athletics Golf Classic on Monday, September 20.
The Golden Bears will host the Golf Classic at the Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow, Massachusetts at 12:30 p.m. It is $175 per person and all proceeds will benefit athletics at Western New England University. Both complete foursomes and individuals are welcome. The deadline for registration and payment is Monday, September 13.
The Athletics Program at Western New England University is an integral part of the institution and overall development of the student-athlete. Our students compete in 20 varsity sports. In addition, the University offers an intramural program that reaches the entire campus community.
All of the student-athletes at Western New England University will benefit from your participation in this golf tournament. The young men and women who compete at the Division III level at Western New England University do so at their own expense, without the benefit of scholarships. They are true student-athletes. This tournament will help ensure their athletic experience. So, on behalf of all of our athletes, thank you for your support.
There will be an honoree luncheon and a cocktail reception and hors d'oeuvres after the tournament. The tournament will be a scramble format on a championship course at Twin Hills Country Club. Golf carts will be provided on the beautiful facilities with practice greens and a driving range. There will also be a few competitions during the day including, closest to the pin, straightest drive, and longest drive. There will also be mulligan tickets, a raffle, and a putting contest throughout the day.
Each year the Classic honors special individuals who have made a positive impact on Western New England University and the Athletic Family. This year we are honoring University President Robert E. Johnson. He joined the Golden Bear Family in August 2020 as our sixth President and has succeeded in helping the University navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, while still providing the best academic and athletic experience possible.
Dr. Johnson's leadership career spans nonprofit colleges and universities in the Northeast and Midwest, including public, private, urban, rural, small, and large institutions, with enrollments from 2,000 to more than 25,000 students. This experience includes public research universities, one of the nation's largest single-campus community colleges, a large Catholic university, a historically Black university, and a turn-around and transformation of a small private college. His career reflects several firsts—as not only an African American leader but also the youngest person holding major senior administrative roles.
