Volleyball Drops Four Set CCC Match at Suffolk

BOSTON, Mass. (September 28, 2022) – The Western New England women's volleyball team faced the Suffolk University Rams on the road for CCC competition. The Golden Bears were defeated by the Rams 3-1.

Records:

  • Western New England: 10-6, 1-2 CCC
  • Suffolk University: 11-5, 1-2 CCC

How It Happened:

The Golden Bears started off to a 2-0 start and the Suffolk Rams evened it up. The first set was back-and-forth. WNE had a few points lead and then the Rams took control of the lead with a four nothing run for a score of 7-5. The Golden Bears scored again but the Rams took the lead to 10-6. WNE forced it within two 12-10, another run put Suffolk up 16-10. An error and a service ace gave WNE two more points. The Rams answered with a kill that was followed by a kill from Sarah Scott. Suffolk was ahead 17-13. The Golden Bears made it a three-point game at 21-18, and then a two-point game at 23-21. They couldn't catch the Rams and they lost the first set 25-21.

A score for each team to start the second set. The Golden Bears went up 3-1 and the Rams tied it. WNE re-gained it and the Rams had it even again and then up two, 6-4. Two kills from Alissa Hawes and an attack error had the score 7-7. A Golden Bear attack error took back the lead for the Rams and then a kill and an error had WNE ahead once again, 9-8. Suffolk hit a four-point spurt that had the Golden Bears fighting to catch up again in the second set, score 12-9. The scoring was point for point both ways until the Rams had another run that brought their score to 19-13. A ball handling error gave WNE a chance to come back and they brought the score within four, 21-17. An error gave it back the Rams and they finished set two with a kill 25-20, and match-point.

Two kill, two aces, and three attack errors started the Golden Bears off with 7-0. An error gave the Rams their first score of set three. It became a kill battle. Scott put another one down, Suffolk had two in a row, and Liz Long had one. The Golden Bears had 9-3 advantage. The Rams forced it to a one-point set, 10-9, and then took a lead at 13-12. Trying to make it a more competitive game, the Golden Bears had another 6-0 run with three kills from Scott, another one from Hawes, and two Rams attack errors, score 18-13. Suffolk fought to get a 4-0 run of their own to make it a one-point set once again. After a few volleys and even scoring, the Golden Bears hit another run that had them with set point at 24-19, the Rams brought it within two, WNE finished it out with a kill from Scott, and won their first set.

After coming back to win set three, the Golden Bears could not steal another set to force it to five. They started off down 3-0, scored on an error, then went down 6-1. They brought the Rams lead down to three 15-12, a run of three in a row had Suffolk ahead 19-12. The Golden Bears forced four more points in the set. The Rams dominated set four, winning 25-16, and taking the game 3-1.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears ended the match with 30 kills, 27 assists, 54 digs, and one block while hitting .015 percent.
  • The Rams ended the match with 51 kills, 47 assists, 65 digs, and two blocks, while hitting .162 percent
  • Sarah Scott led the Golden Bears in kills with 11, adding 11 digs.
  • At the Libero, Becca Mayer led the team in digs with 15, adding three assists.
  • Hailey Sell contributed with 24 assists, six digs, three kills and two service aces.

Up Next: The Golden Bears remain on the road for their next couple games, Saturday, October 1. They will be taking part in a tri-match hosted by Rivier University. The Golden Bears face Rivier at 11 a.m. and then Bay Path University at 3 p.m.
