Golden Bear Volleyball Shuts Out Curry 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 12, 2022) – The Western New England women's volleyball team faced the Curry College Colonels at home where they defeated the Colonels 3-0.

Records:

  • Western New England: 13-8, 2-3 CCC
  • Curry College: 4-15, 0-4 CCC

How It Happened: Set one was all Golden Bear volleyball. Yemayma Molina put the first kill down to get WNE started. Curry got an attack error and Molina earned another kill to start them off 3-0. After a couple of service errors both ways, the Golden Bears put up a 10-2 lead with two kills and a service ace from Taylor Geist and two other kills from Alissa Hawes and Sarah Scott. The Gulls fought out a kill of their own, but it was answered by a six-point run for the Golden Bears who had a 16-3 lead. WNE held Curry to only six points in the first set while putting down 14 kills.

The second set started with another Golden Bear 4-0 start. Geist earned the first kill of the set, followed by Molina, and an ace from Zoe Bozzay. After a few attack errors and another Molina kill, WNE had a 7-1 lead. The Colonels made the second set more of a close match. They battled to bring the score within two-points for a score of 11-9. The Golden Bears would bring back up their lead, but the Colonels would not back down. The Golden Bears started a run led and ended with a Kate Lange kill. WNE increased their lead to 22-14. After working hard to bump the score up, they let the Colonels back in the set 19-23, but a bad set on the Curry side gave WNE set point, and an attack error ended it. The Golden Bears had match-point after closing out set two 25-19.

To start set three, again the Golden Bears scored first. The beginning of the set was close but got away from the Colonels. The score 5-3 Golden Bears, Curry had three errors that led to the Golden Bears being up 9-3. The scoring switched back-and-forth for a few plays. That ended with a 9-0 run for WNE, that included three kills from Molina and one from Geist, and two aces from Bozzay. The score was 21-7. This sealed the deal for the Golden Bears who only let the Colonels score three more times in the final set. Two kills from Scott, a service error, and another Lange kill ended the game with a Golden Bear win 3-0.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears ended the match with 35 kills, 33 assists, 58 digs, and six blocking assists while hitting .250 percent.
  • The Colonels ended the match with 11 kills, 11 assists, and 47 digs, while hitting -.099 percent
  • Yemayma Molina led Western New England in kills with 10 and added three blocking assists.
  • At the Libero, Becca Mayer led the team in digs with 21, adding five assists.
  • Taylor Geist led in assists with 25, plus six kills, five digs, two services aces, and two blocking assists.
