Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (October 7, 2022) – The Western New England women's volleyball team came away with a three-set sweep on Friday night over the Lyons of Mount Holyoke College, taking down MHC 25-20, 25-17, and 25-21.

Records:

  • Mount Holyoke College:6-9

How it Happened:
Western New England and Mount Holyoke exchanged points back and forth through the first right points of the match before WNE's Sarah Scott was able to serve an ace to give WNE an 8-6 lead. Three kills by three different Golden Bears, Hailey Sell, Alissa Hawes, and Sarah Scott, would deliver a three-point lead for Western New England at 14-11. Mount Holyoke would battle back, however, tying the match at 18 all before a ball handling error on the Lyons would reward Western New England with a point. WNE would cruse to the end of the set, picking up a 25-20 win after two kills from Yemayma Molina

Western New England would carry their strong momentum to close out the first set into the second set after ripping off the four points of the second set. Kills by Alissa Hawes and Yemayma Molina would pace the Golden Bears. Mount Holyoke would continue their battle, as they did in the first set, getting the next three points in the contest before WNE could score again. Mount Holyoke would take their first lead of the match at 12-11 on a kill by Marianne Simon. After the kill, WNE would score the next three points as the back-and-forth match would favor Western New England. Yemayma Molina and Alissa Hawes would come down with powerful spikes to give WNE a 14-12 lead. Sarah Scott and Hailey Sell would help Western New England pounce on Mount Holyoke and take the second set 25-17. 

Liz Long opened the third set for the Golden Bears with a kill as Western New England would eventually take a 25-21 victory to win the match. In the third set, WNE and Mount Holyoke saw multiple lead changes, though Mount Holyoke would not lead by more than one point throughout the third set. Sarah Scott would lead the Golden Bears to victory, smashing down four kills in the set, as Western New England would take a 25-21 victory from the Lyons. Yemayma Molina would shut the door on Mount Holyoke with a thunderous kill to take the match. 

Inside the Lines:

  • CCC kills leader Sarah Scott put on another performance, leading Western New England with 14 kills in the match. Scott also came away with 34 total attacks, two assists and 13 digs. 
  • Hailey Sell came away with 35 assists for Western New England in the match, leading all players in the match. 
  • Alissa Hawes and Yemayma Molina came away with double digit kills each, with Hawes slapping down 13 kills and Molina coming away with ten. 
  • WNE hit .231 as a team and collected 47 total kills on the night. The Golden Bears came up with 79 digs, led by Becca Mayer would collected 14 digs for WNE. 
  • Mount Holyoke hit .059 in the match as a team and was led by Mar Simon who collected six kills in the match.
