Suffolk Defeats Men's Basketball 100-62

BOSTON, Mass. (December 4, 2021) – The Golden Bears men's basketball team continued conference play today at Suffolk University where Western New England fell 100-62.

Records:

  • Western New England: 2-6, 0-2 CCC

How It Happened:

The first half opened with a 9-0 run by the Rams when Tim Restall recorded a steal and went to the other end to make a three and get the Golden Bears on the board. The Rams scored five more points before Restall struck again for the Golden Bears with a jumper. The two teams traded baskets with Brian Berritto making a jump shot and Brian Geitner hitting a jumper for Western New England. The Rams then went on a 6-0 run forcing the Golden Bears into a timeout. Out of the timeout, Gavin Greene made a jump shot followed by a pair of free throws by Jake Harrison to get the Golden Bears within 10 (23-13). With 9:51 left in the half, Restall made a layup followed by Steevens Phelimond hitting a three to put Western New England within five (23-18). The Rams answered with a three to get ahead by eight. Restall made a layup at the 7:32 mark and on the next possession Andrew Byfield hit a big three to get the Golden Bears within three (26-23) with 6:59 left in the half. Three straight points for the Rams extended their lead once against before Harrison made a layup for the Golden Bears to stop the Rams' run. He completed the and-one with a free throw. A 10-0 run by the Rams forced the Golden Bears into a timeout down 40-26. The Rams scored another basket out of the timeout before the Golden Bears ended the run with a layup by Greene with 1:20 on the clock. A pair of free throws for each team kept the Rams in the lead 44-30 before they hit a three to end the half leading Western New England 47-30.

The Rams opened the second half with a jumper while Restall answered for the Golden Bears with a layup. Another 10-0 run for the Rams put them ahead 59-32 while the Golden Bears worked to get a layup by Greene to stop the Rams. The Rams hit a three before Kenny Flynn made two free throws and a layup in response to another Rams three. The two teams traded baskets until the 12:34 mark when the Rams scored five points in a row. The Golden Bears answered with a Restall layup followed by Phelimond free throws. A 4-2 stretch for the Golden Bears resulted in being down 76-49 with 9:26 left to play. A 7-0 run for the Rams only extended their lead before the back-and-forth action began with neither team able to score more than two baskets consecutively. The Golden Bears were unable to stop the Rams offense and lost the game 100-62.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Golden Bears shot 30.3 percent from the field, 21.1 percent from three, 78.3 percent from the foul line and tallied 33 rebounds, nine assists and 10 steals in the game.
  • Restall led the Golden Bears with 15 points while Byfield came off the bench and recorded 10.
  • Harrison earned eight points and seven rebounds in the game and led the team with four assists.
