CCC Tournament: Western New England Held to Two Hits in 3-1 Loss to Salve Regina

Golden Bears will head back to Newport on Saturday needing three wins for CCC title

NEWPORT, R.I. (May 4, 2017) – In a matchup featuring the top two seeds in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament, the second-seeded Western New England University softball team was held to two hits in a 3-1 loss to top-seeded Salve Regina University on Thursday evening at Toppa Field.

Following the loss, Western New England (24-10) will head back to Newport on Saturday to take on third-seeded Roger Williams in an elimination game at 11 a.m. The winner of that contest will need two wins over Salve Regina (24-11) to capture the CCC title.

Top Performers
• Senior catcher Corianna DeLisi (Tuxedo, N.Y.) and senior shortstop Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.) recorded one hit each for the Golden Bears, while freshman Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) walked twice.

• CCC Pitcher of the Year Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) was impressive in the circle for Salve Regina, striking out seven batters and allowing just one unearned run on two hits over a complete game performance.
• Sophomores Emily Woznick (Sandy Hook, Conn.), Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) and Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded two hits each for the Seahawks, while Florent also drove in one run.

Game Review
• Neither team was able to record a hit over the first two innings, but Western New England broke through for the game's first run in the top of the third. DeLisi singled with one out, before advancing to second on a sacrifice and coming in to score on a Salve Regina fielding error.
• Kistner, who got the start in the circle for the Golden Bears, surrendered just one hit over the first three innings. The Seahawks struck for three runs on three hits in the fourth, however. Woznick led off with a single, and a double by Riley put two runners in scoring position. Salve Regina tied the contest on an RBI groundout by senior Nikki Bukovsky (Westport, Conn.), and pulled ahead two batters later when junior Kristen Hickey (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) drew a walk with the bases loaded. The home team added a third run on the next play as Florent recorded a sacrifice fly, scoring Bukovsky.
• Boarman took control from there, as she allowed just one Western New England batter to reach base over the final three innings, retiring the side in order in both the fifth and seventh.

Notes
• Freshman Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) came on in relief of Kistner and pitched a pair of scoreless frames while allowing just one hit.
• DeLisi has recorded at least one hit in all six games since returning to the Western New England lineup following a two week absence.
