NEWPORT, R.I. (October 20, 2021) – The Western New England women's soccer team got a goal in the 1stminute of the contest, following up that goal with another tally in the 25th minute and played a defensive game for the remainder of the 75 minutes and were able to take down the Seahawks of Salve Regina University 2-1.

Records:

  • Western New England: 10-5-0 (6-1 CCC)
  • Salve Regina University: 6-9-1 (2-4-1 CCC)

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears wasted very little time in the opening minute of the game as they were able to capitalize on an early chance to take the lead. Allison Bruehwiler took a shot on GK Georgia Drake which Drake was able to knock down, though the ball rolled just a few feet past her, and Lindsay Reidy was able to attack the loose ball and send it to the back of the net to give Western New England the 1-0 lead. WNE took the first seven of nine shots in the first half, with two of those finding goal.

Just 23 minutes after the goal scored from Reidy, the Golden Bears tallied again. After the Seahawks failed to clear their defensive end. Isabella Montalvo was able to knock down a clear attempt by Salve Regina and go one on one with the goalie and tucked the ball into the lower left corner of the net to give WNE the 2-0 lead. The Golden Bears dominated the first half, out shooting Salve 7-2, while taking two corners to Salve's one.

The defensive second half was apparent, though Salve Regina got more scoring chances. Molly McLaughlin made her first save of the game in the 54th minute on a header attempt by Meagan McLaughlin to deny the scoring chance. Both the Golden Bears and Seahawks would go back and forth with shots of their own, though both goalkeepers came up with saves to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of WNE. In the 82nd minute, Salve Regina would tally a goal when Meghan Moniz sent a through ball to a streaking Meagan McLaughlin who buried her fifth goal of the season to cut their deficit in half.

The goal by McLaughlin would be the final shot of the game, as the Golden Bears back line of defense shut down the Seahawks in their attempt to make a comeback. WNE was out shot in the second half 5-4, though GK McLaughlin came through with three saves to persevere the victory for Western New England.
